July Newsletter-Just Breathe

Breath is Enough ~Robert William

I draw sweet air
Deeply and long,
As pure as prayer,
As sweet as song.
Where lilies glow
And roses wreath,
Heart-joy I know
Is just to breathe.

As July turns our thoughts to freedoms that our forefathers fought for, our appreciation of just being and breathing grows. Our breath is vital and brings us life. As we move through our day our breath is everything to us and yet many never think about it. The importance of our breath escapes many as do the freedoms we hold just by being in this country of the United States. Breath brings us freedom.

In yoga the breath is utilized in many different ways. We can expel our breath to create space to move. We can use a different type of breath to create heat within ourselves. We can use a breathing exercise to create an effect on the mind or body. We can deepen our breath to assist us in coming out of relaxation.

Our breath is so important to us and is vital to our very being. In the poem above, the poet exclaims that ‘just to breathe’ is his heart’s joy. The Heart Chakra is directly related to the lungs and chest and governs our breath. So in a sense our breath is indeed our heart’s joy, as we could not have one with out the other.

July the class focus will be on the breath. We will move through asanas utilizing our breath to assist us in the poses and transitions. We will practice different types of breathing excercises. And we will focus mainly on the basics of the Ujyii technique.
